The Royal College of Pathologists hosts the Governance Board for the National Laboratory Medicine Catalogue. This new project, funded by the Department of Health (England), is developing a list of standardised names and associated codes for all laboratory tests that can be used to evaluate NHS patients.
The catalogue is in the early stages of development, but ultimately it is hoped that the list will be associated with basic advice on the appropriate uses of each test. This development might be regarded as doing for laboratory medicine what the British National Formulary has for many years done for drug therapy.
In addition to the Board, there is a ‘Stakeholder group’ consisting of a list of individuals and organisations who receive email updates, attend an annual meeting and are invited to comment on the development of the Catalogue. If you or your organisation wish to join the Stakeholder Group please email the Board Secretary, Ms Anne Boxill, on anne.boxill@rcpath.org, explaining the nature of your interest.
