Professional performance

Professional performance can be defined as the quality of clinical practice in the workplace. Performance is a complex construct and is dependent on context. It is difficult to assess objectively because it is underpinned by a range of knowledge, skills, attitudes, judgements, beliefs and values.

Further information on professional performance

The Professional Standards Unit receives recommendations emerging from reviews of professional performance from the Professional Performance Panel and provide administrative support to the Panel. The Colleges’ Professional Performance Panel deals with problem cases in all disciplines of pathology.

Further information on the Professional Performance Panel

The Professional Standards Unit and the Professional Performance Panel have developed the following guidelines relating to professional performance entitled ‘Concerns about performance in pathology: Guidance for healthcare organisations and pathologists’.

The Professional Standards Unit has a bank of trained reviewers.  Reviewers are periodically recruited.  Details of their role and responsibilities can be found in the document entitled ‘Appointment of professional performance reviewers’.
