(From the 2003-2004 Annual Report)

Contribution To National Reports
The Sub-committee has been actively involved in producing a number of reports including a National Institute for Clinical Excellence Technology Appraisal, The clinical effectiveness and cost effectiveness of immunosuppressive therapy for renal transplantation, National Occupational Standards and Guidelines for H&I and the Human Tissue Bill. In addition, the Sub-committee has expressed its view on a number of other documents including the Department of Health’s publication, Saving Lives, Valuing Donors and the In-Vitro Diagnostic Devices Directive.

Clinical Scientists
Recruitment of clinical scientists is of particular importance to H&I and the Sub-committee continues to be actively involved in measures to boost recruitment and improve training. This is primarily achieved via links with the Standing Committee for Clinical Science and the British Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics.

Examinations
The regulations and guidelines for the College’s examinations for Membership and Diplomas and for Membership on the basis of published work were revised and updated, as part of a process initiated by the Examinations Committee. It is expected that a revision of these guidelines will be performed every year. Similarly, the current composition of the Panel of Examiners was also reviewed and updated with the appointment of new examiners. In view of the increasing demand for regulation and accountability in the examination process, the College will be arranging training sessions for existing and newly appointed examiners during the coming year.

Academic Activities
The Sub-committee has prepared an academic programme for July 2004 entitled ‘Understanding transplantation in the 21st century’.
