The International Committee was established in September 2003. It subsumed the existing Overseas Strategy Group previously established by Council in October 2001.
The International Committee is co-chaired by Dr Archie Prentice and Dr Imelda Bates.

Supporting Laboratory Medicine in Low-Income Countries

The purpose of this workshop was to explore the contribution that the College could make to supporting laboratory medicine in the developing world. It was attended by pathologists, scientists and other health professionals with experience in developing countries. Participants recommended that the College should focus on supporting career development, quality assurance and evidence-based practice, and that the College should be a UK coordination centre and a powerful advocate for resources for laboratory medicine in poorer countries.

Supporting pathology education in Ghana and Malawi
The College, together with the British Council (DelPHE scheme), is funding volunteers to teach on postgraduate pathology programmes in Blantyre, Malawi (haematology and microbiology) and Accra, Ghana (haematology). Doctors, BMSs and nurses who are interested in volunteering should contact Adobea Akuffo at adobea.akuffo@rcpath.org.
The College/DelPHE scheme will cover the cost of fares and subsistence.

Intergovernmental Organisations Committee – First Report
In 2008, an Ad Hoc Committee on Intergovernmental Organisations undertook an inquiry into the effectiveness of action carried out through intergovernmental organisations (of which the UK is a member) to control the global spread of communicable diseases.
