Celebrate Pathology for NHS70
College celebrates 70 years of the NHS with launch of new careers materials
#NHS70 is a celebration of our health service – thanking the talented professionals who work within it, highlighting its rich history and building confidence in its future.
As part of NHS70, the College looks to the future of pathology, by launching a wide range of new and engaging careers resources, aimed at inspiring the next generation of undergraduates and school students to choose a career in pathology.
Developed in consultation with College members, and with medical undergraduates and school students, the extensive online content covers all specialties and includes up-to-date information and photos taken in pathology labs from across the UK.
Our web pages provide detailed information for users as they explore the content: from the introductory page: www.rcpath.org/careers, through summaries of each specialty, to in-depth training information. There are also ‘day in the life’ interviews with pathologists showcasing the diverse range of pathology specialties as well as links to other key areas of our website including curricula and examinations.
The College will be promoting the new resources via social media, membership communication channels, and through our networks including medical schools and secondary schools.
We have also created two new printed postcards featuring our chosen hashtag #pathologycareers, to support the launch of the new content. In addition, a vibrant set of printed careers leaflets are also being developed for use at careers and public engagement events; these will be launched later in the summer along with a series of video interviews with recently-qualified consultants.
We’re asking members to help us mark NHS70 by sharing the new careers pages as widely as possible. You can share the main landing page or feel free to champion the pages about your own specialty. If you’re on social media please tag @rcpath and include #pathologycareers. Feel free to hashtag your own specialty too! Members are also encouraged to promote the new resources to medical undergraduates, and to schools if have relevant contacts. If you would like to order any postcards for events, please register the event then fill out the promotional materials request form.
NHS70 resources for members
For members who would like to run their own NHS70 events or activities, we will have a range of resources to help you raise awareness in your own area, whether it is in July, or at another time – we’d love to see lots of NHS70-themed events run for National Pathology Week in November (5 – 11 November).
Also as part of the NHS70 anniversary year, the College is:
- encouraging pathologists to give a talk about their work and career in a school near them as part of the Academy of Royal Colleges’ collaboration with the Speakers4Schools initiative
- involving our members in the Science Museum’s NHS70-themed Late event in July via our advanced science communication training
- signposting resources and relevant information from the NHS70 website to our members and support them to organise an event or activity in their area.
More information and links to events and resources will be added to this page in due course. If you have any questions, comments or ideas for events in your area, please do get in touch on firstname.lastname@example.org.
