The Royal College of Pathologists exists to support pathologists to provide the best possible care for their patients

Much of that care is provided by junior doctors, who form a skilled and valued part of the workforce. I have already expressed my concerns about the impact of the proposed new contract on the safety of patients and the well-being of trainees. Visit Junior Doctors' contracts.

Junior doctors have voted overwhelmingly for industrial action, which is planned for December 1st, 8th and 16th. The GMC has issued guidance to doctors about their right to take such action and their responsibilities in relation to care of their patients. I am confident that senior doctors in pathology will work with their junior colleagues to ensure that patients are not put at risk.

I encourage NHS Employers and the BMA to return to negotiations, setting aside the obstacles that have led to the current impasse. Our junior doctors deserve to be supported in delivering high quality care, both now and in the future.
