This section provides information about the approval of pathology training programmes and sites.

The General Medical Council has a principal function of securing the maintenance of standards, and requirements relating to, postgraduate medical education and training. The GMC has the power to give, withdraw and attach conditions to approvals of postgraduate medical education and training intended to lead to the award of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Trainees who wish to receive a CCT upon satisfactory completion of training must follow an approved curriculum in the GMC approved training sites and programmes.

Separate GMC approval (and agreement from the College) must be sought in the following instances:

  • An additional training programme or training site not previously approved by the GMC.
  • Out of programme training or out of programme research posts. Where a trainee is undertaking out of programme training, they must complete the appropriate forms on the College website and submit them to the College prior to applying to the GMC for approval. In order for the out of programme training to be approved towards the award of the CCT, the GMC must approve the out of programme training prior to the trainee starting the post.
  • Acting up as a consultant (if the period of acting up is not deemed to be part of the normal CCT-approved specialty training programme).

The GMC have been reviewing its processes around programme approval and the GMC have decided to freeze their current separate approval of academic posts (Academic Clinical Fellows and Clinical Lecturers). Please note that it remains a requirement that all academic trainees are in posts that are within the current GMC approved programmes and that they are in the specialty of that programme as without this the trainee may not be eligible for a CCT.

A list of approved training programmes and sites is published on the GMC website. The list is updated on a bi-weekly basis.

Documents for submission to the RCPath for the approval of a programme or additional training site:

1. The relevant GMC forms

Applying for approval of a new specialty programme - Form A

Applying for approval of a new training site - Form B

Please note that Academic Post approvals are covered as long as the specialty programme/location is approved. If the location is not approved then a Form B must be completed so that the Academic Post is covered.

To remove approved training locations / Local Education Providers from an exisitng approved specialty or sub-specialty programme - Form D

2. The College's application forms

3. As well as the relevant forms above an educational job description should be submitted (if information is not covered in the above applications)
