Workforce

Planning for the future. Assisting in the present.

Workforce planning helps to:

  • get the right people
  • with the right skills
  • in the right place, at the right time
  • and at the right costs.

Workforce planning is essential to the provision of an efficient, high quality pathology service. To support workforce planning, the College collates information from monitoring appointments of consultant and SAS grade pathologists and conducting direct workforce surveys. This enables us to shape decisions made by Health Education England (HEE) and other relevant professional groups in the UK, and to advise on trends in recruitment in pathology specialties.

As Assistant Registrar I have been working very closely with the workforce team on the Job Description Review process. It is a pleasure to work with a department that is so dedicated to getting this process right, and ensuring that the process works as seamlessly as possible, whilst also addressing any issues that arise in a timely manner. I have also witnessed the process from the other side, sitting on an interview panel for Consultant appointments in the presence of a RCPath representative, and have found this to be a rewarding experience, appreciating the wealth of experience that the College representative brings to the interviewing panel.

– Ms Avril Wayte, RCPath Assistant Registrar

The College also works to maintain standards in pathology by reviewing and approving consultant and SAS-level job descriptions, both medical and scientific. We provide an assessor to attend all advisory appointment committees (AACs), to ensure employing bodies are able to appoint the right candidate for the post.
