Chair, Cytopathology Sub-Committee

Nominations are now invited for the Chair of the Cytopathology Sub-committee, taking up office until the Annual General Meeting, November 2028. You must be a Fellow of the College to be eligible.

Why should I apply?

The Royal College of Pathologists is committed to setting and maintaining professional standards and promoting excellence in the teaching and practice of pathology, for the benefit of patients. Those holding office in the College contribute to this important work by providing professional leadership and contributing at a national level to the maintenance and development of pathology services and the quality of patient care.

Dr Anthony Maddox, Interim Chair of the Cytopathology Sub-committee

Cytopathology is an integral and integrated part of Cellular Pathology. The Cytopathology sub-committee draws on the expertise of College members and like-minded bodies to ensure we help advance cytopathology with the full support of the College. Developments in molecular analysis and digital imaging are likely to change how cytopathology is applied in both the diagnostic arena and in cervical screening, where cytology still plays an important part. In addition, increasing involvement of biomedical scientists in areas such as Rapid Onsite Evaluation (ROSE) and diagnostic reporting provide opportunities for collaborative working both on an individual basis and with the Institute for Biomedical Science (IBMS) but also require robust governance.

The RCPath Cytopathology subcommittee is involved in all these areas and, in my tenure as interim Chair, we have initiated links with both the College Digital Pathology Committee and the IBMS, where we now have a reciprocal arrangement with their Cytopathology Specialty Advisory Panel.

The sub-committee must continue to move forward and reflect new developments and changes. I have been proud to help do this so far, and I am sure the next Chair will do so too.
