College comment on the changes to the pension system announced in the spring budget.

Commenting on the annoucement from the Chancellor on changes to pensions in the spring budget 2023, the College President, Professor Mike Osborn said:

"The Royal College of Pathologists has taken every opportunity to make the case for NHS pension reform with parliamentarians and policymakers.

The widely reported problems with the pension scheme led to some consultants reducing their hours or taking early retirement, contributing significantly to the workforce crisis in pathology.

The changes announced today will, in part, help retain these skilled and experienced pathologists in the NHS.

Alongside our colleagues at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and other medical royal colleges, restructuring the NHS pension scheme has been a core element of our advocacy work.

We welcome the fact the Government has listened to us and has today announced changes to pensions."
