Dr Bernie Croal gave some pragmatic thoughts on possible solutions and contingencies to the main challenges facing patholgoy

We were delighted that our College President, Dr Bernie Croal, delivered a keynote address at the 5th NHS Pathology Conference on improving NHS Diagnostics. Dr Croal outlined what the main pathology challenges are at government, NHS, Private sector, professional body, pathology provider and patient level and gave some pragmatic thoughts on possible solutions and contingencies.

Dr Croal also joined a panel of national leaders to discuss Pathology Across the UK – Meeting Demand, Building Capacity. The panel explored how the sector is evolving to meet increasing pressures and areas covered included workforce and resource challenges to the opportunities offered by digital transformation, automation, and AI.

As we await publication of the Government’s 10-year plan it is vital to recognise the importance of pathology services for the delivery of healthcare and for the Government's ambition to fix and strengthen the NHS. The three shifts to prevention, digitisation and the community will all rely on pathology services to be equipped with the relevant workforce infrastructure, estate and IT.
