25 October 2023

International Pathology Day is held each year to recognise and celebrate the achievements of pathology and laboratory medicine services that address global health challenges and improve the health outcomes of global communities.

Climate change has been identified as a leading health threat, with the power to reverse decades of advances in global health, placing increased pressures on already fragile health systems. That's why this year's International Pathology Day (IPD) theme is 'The impact of climate change on disease and what can be done to tackle the challenges', to raise awareness of the ongoing issues climate change presents to pathology and potential solutions moving forward for a healthier future for us and our planet.

Join us and our sponsors, The British Society for Haematology (BSH) and The Pathologist. On Wednesday, 8 November, from 10:00 – 14:00 GMT for a virtual conference.

IPD will concentrate on the impact of climate change on disease, focusing on ways to tackle the challenges faced by pathologists, scientists, and the wider population. The event will also discuss extreme weather events, such as flooding, wildfires, and scorching temperatures, which contribute to the burden of disease and the evolution of existing diseases.

College President Professor Mike Osborn will chair the event, and the President-Elect will give an address at the start.

Speakers

Special guest speaker Professor Virginia Murray, Head of Global Disaster Risk Reduction for the UK Health and Security Agency Centre for Climate and Health Security, will open the conference, sharing insights and essential take-home messages.

Speakers will also discuss the impact of climate change on healthcare in India, the expanding range of dengue fever cases in Muscat due to climate change and applying sustainability principles in pathology practice.

The roundtable

Our signature roundtable discussion carries on the event's theme as four panellists focus on 'Planetary Health,' each concentrating on their expertise to highlight what can be done to encourage evidence-based environmentally sustainable policies to promote human health, well-being and prosperity around food security and nutrition risks, AMR and the challenges posed by the climate change for world populations.

Optional lunchtime activities

While we all enjoy our favourite lunchtime bites, there will be the chance to learn about the College's new net zero strategy and carbon reduction roadmap project and view this year's poster competition entries.

Taking us into the afternoon will be the founder of Tiny Pause, Sam Thorogood he will provide an optional 5-minute guided mindfulness practice. He supports over 18,000 people globally to enhance focus, reduce self-criticism, and strengthen resilience. His clients, to name a few, include the NHS, Amnesty and Cambridge University.

Poster competition winners announcement

Judges President-Elect Dr Bernie Croal, Professor Jeff Allen, Lay member of the International Committee, and Dr Claire Gordon, Roundtable Panellist, will announce the winners of the fifth poster competition for International Pathology Day.

The contribution and achievements of pathology and laboratory medicine services that address global health challenges and improve the health outcomes of global communities have been recognised and celebrated worldwide on International Pathology Day since it launched in 2014. We hope you will be there.
