College President, Dr Mike Osborn and Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Provost of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) and Dean of the College of Medicine, Dubai, met in November to honour and celebrate the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the university and the College, marking the start of an important and exciting three-year international collaboration.

Immediate past president of the College, Professor Jo Martin and Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Provost of MBRU and Dean of the College of Medicine's video shows the signing of the MoU.

MBRU aims to become a global hub for innovative and integrated healthcare education and research. The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees through three colleges, the Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dental Medicine, which has several speciality dental postgraduate programmes, the College of Medicine, for undergraduate medical students and a postgraduate program in biomedical sciences, and the College of Nursing and Midwifery which has postgraduate speciality nursing programmes.

This promising alliance between the college and university will facilitate shared support and an exchange of scientific knowledge and advances in the field of medical science. It commits to establishing a mutual partnership in the education of medical students and to the opening up of more opportunities for academic and continued professional development.  Some key areas of collaboration will be:

Student placements

Each year, four students will have the opportunity to spend between four to six weeks in either a haematology, chemical, or histopathology laboratory within a UK teaching hospital. The aim is to provide an immersive experience in the day-to-day running of a pathology laboratory, giving students exposure to activities such as the transfer of samples from one location to another, and how the flow of results and turnaround occur beyond an educational setting. Undergraduates will gain first-hand experience, invaluable in choosing a future path in pathology.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Continuing Medical Education (CME)

Professional conferences, workshops, and courses ratified by Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the College will be run jointly. One example of a joint event is an annual pathology update to be held in Dubai covering histopathology, haematology or chemical pathology centred talks.

Speciality training and curriculum development

Discussions and work towards the development and implementation of Dubai’s first residency programme is also on the horizon. The aim is for the programme to follow the College’s new training curricula for all specialities and subspecialties, launching in August 2021. This will also provide scope for the pending changes to some examinations and the College’s ePortfolio. The way in which assessments are to be carried out in the workplace will also be incorporated.
