This vital role provides essential leadership for the medical examiner system in England and Wales. The system is still in its infancy, having become statutory in September 2024. Huw’s leadership will build on the excellent work of Dr Alan Fletcher, the first substantive National Medical Examiner.
Dr Bernie Croal, President of the College, said;
‘I would like to congratulate Dr Twamley on his appointment as Interim National Medical Examiner (NME). The Royal College Pathologists, as lead college for medical examiners, works closely with the NME to set standards and provide training for medical examiners and medical examiner officers.
‘Dr Twamley’s appointment recognises the importance of dedicated leadership of the medical examiner system at a crucial time, providing much-needed support of bereaved people and opportunities for learning to improve the care of patients. We look forward to the confirmation of a substantive appointment to the role in due course.’
Dr Twamley is a Consultant in Critical Care in Lancashire and was Regional Medical Examiner for the North West until his appointment as Interim National Medical Examiner.
