The College President comments on a new proposal from NHS England on the current NHs pension arrangements for doctors.

Professor Jo Martin, President said:

'The current pension arrangements for doctors have led to some consultants reducing their hours or taking early retirement. This is affecting patient care and making pressures on pathology services – which are already facing acute workforce shortages – even worse. It is crucial that these experienced clinicians continue working in the health service. We welcome proposals for the NHS in England to reimburse pension tax paid by doctors undertaking extra work for the NHS.

However, this is only a temporary solution until the end of the tax year in 2020. We call on the next government to act swiftly and implement a long-term UK-wide solution for the benefit of patients.'
