The 2018 RCPath Undergraduate Pathology Summer School saw over 70 UK and International students take part in the event throughout Friday 17th and Saturday 18th August

Every year, the College is proud to host the Pathology Summer School – a chance for undergraduates to find out more about careers in pathology. This year's two-day event saw a great group of young people get to explore the specialties, allowing them the chance to talk with professionals who love what they do. This is the 4th year the event has been run with the support of The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, Association of Clinical Pathologists, British Division of the International Academy of Pathology, British Haematology Society, British Infection Association and the British Neuropathology Society.  This year we are also delighted to have the support of Clinical Aspects of Protein Assays (CAPA) who sponsored the immunology session prizes.

The first day involved sessions on Emerging Technologies, Work/Life Balance, Haematology, Immunology and Neuropathology. One of the highlights of this year's Summer School was the pots sessions, hosted at the Gordon museum. These sessions, run by Dr Matt Clarke and Dr Katie Allen, provided the students a chance to examine interesting and unusual specimens and hear the stories behind each one. Students were fascinated by the  case studies and we received great feedback on how much they learned in a short period.

Dr Mike Osborn's session on death investigation proved to also be a favourite with many students commenting on how thought-provoking and engaging the session was. The end of the first day was finished with a delicious buffet and Pathology quiz, complimented by beautiful views of London and plenty of laughter.

On the second day, there was plenty of enthusiasm in the lectures and breakout sessions, which covered Infectious Diseases, Histopathology, Leadership and Research. Dr Jo Martin received many compliments from students, who enjoyed the relaxed style of her session and hearing her personal experiences and journey.

This year's Summer School was a very successful event. We hope students walked away with an interest to further explore a career in Pathology, and an understanding of how fundamental pathology is to patient care.
