Mr Bell, Labour MP for Swansea West, Parliamentary Secretary (HM Treasury) and Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Work and Pensions), first visited cellular pathology, where he started in the specimen reception area and heard about the challenges associated with receiving samples from a number of different sites. Mr Bell then met the volunteer bikers who supplement the transport van service. He also visited the cut-up area and staff undertaking microscopy.
Following this, he visited blood sciences, and then the microbiology department, where Dr Brendan Healy outlined the establishment of the ID service alongside the microbiology service, and the service's recent patient award.
The visit ended with a tour of the immunohistochemistry department.
