Doctors returning to practice

Doctors may find that they need to return to practice after a period of absence. Doctors may have been absent due to illness, or may be returning from working in a different area of clinical practice to their usual clinical area, for example.

It is the duty of all doctors to ensure that they are safe to return to practice, and The Royal College of Pathologists endorses the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges' Return to Practice Guidance for doctors. All doctors who have been absent for 3 months or longer should refer to this guidance, including in all cases where a licence to practise has been surrendered and then restored by the GMC.
