Curriculum update consultation

The College is undertaking the revision of all Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) curricula in response to the 2013 Shape of Training report, and subsequent revision of General Medical Council standards for postgraduate medical education.

The revision work is subject to a two-part approval process led by the General Medical Council. The College has obtained the approval of the Curriculum Oversight Group (COG) for our proposed Cellular Pathology curricula, and the Training team, alongside the Cellular Pathology Curriculum Working Group, are now undertaking the work of revising the Histopathology, Diagnostic Neuropathology, Forensic Histopathology and Paediatric and Perinatal Pathology curricula. This is a large-scale project involving the integration of high level outcomes as required by the General Medical Council. This outcomes-based mode of assessing capability is brand new to College curricula and means a complete overhaul of the existing system of assessing competencies, along with a revised syllabus.

As part of the curriculum development process, we are keen to consult with organisations on the new curricula. We are particularly keen on feedback relating to the following points:

  • Are the stages of critical progression clearly linked to the curriculum?
  • Is the purpose and objective of the curriculum clear?
  • Has it been made clear what capabilities trainees must demonstrate, and to what level, to complete training?
  • Does the curriculum support flexibility and transferability of learning outcomes?
  • Does the curriculum raise any issues for trainees with one or more shared protected characteristic?
  • Are the learning outcomes and educational approaches appropriate to the stated purpose of the curriculum?
  • Is there sufficient guidance provided to ensure safe training and achievement of learning outcomes?
  • Is there sufficient guidance provided detailing the responsibilities, capabilities and expected levels of performance of educational supervisors?
  • Does the assessment blueprint clearly describe how the learning outcomes are assessed?
  • Is this curriculum deliverable?

Please note that the syllabuses and assessments are still in development and are not available for consultation at this time. A separate consultation will be held for these components.

If you would like to provide feedback, please respond via email (ideally including references to page number where this is appropriate). If you have any queries or would like more information regarding the curriculum revision process, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]

The deadline for comments on this consultation is 2nd January 2020.
