The Government has announced £75m funding for faster and earlier diagnosis of prostate cancer

College President Professor Jo Martin:

The Prime Minister's announcement of £75 million to support new research into early diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer is very welcome news. Early diagnosis is a crucial factor in the successful treatment of cancer.

Pathologists are at the heart of cancer prevention through screening, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment and histopathologists are the specialists who provide a definitive cancer diagnosis. However the histopathology workforce is at a critical juncture, staffing levels have not kept up with rising demand for cancer diagnosis and over a third of histopathologists are expected to retire in the next five years. It is vitally important that we invest in the pathology workforce now to ensure men with suspected prostate cancer are able to get a swift and accurate diagnosis.
