The medical examiner system will be a transformative part of the NHS safety system.

The College welcomes the recognition of the benefits of the new medical examiner system in the NHS Patient Safety Strategy, published in July by NHS England and NHS Improvement. The system will provide much-needed support for bereaved families and is a vital step in the drive to improve patient safety in the NHS. The College is the lead medical royal college for medical examiners and continues to play a key role in influencing the government’s work around their introduction. We provide medical examiner training, information on setting up a medical examiner system and advice on how to become a medical examiner.

Dr Alan Fletcher, National Medical Examiner, describes the new system:

The medical examiner system will be a transformative part of the NHS safety system, giving the bereaved a voice, while ensuring that the period after death is as problem free as possible. Several important inquiries have recommended this system be established.
