Recommendation on the use of tumour staging systems from the College's Working Group on Cancer Services (October 2025)

The Working Group on Cancer Services has reviewed its recommendations for the use of staging systems following the recent publication of TNM Classifications of Tumours, 9th edition (TNM 9).

The College recommends transition to TNM 9 for patients diagnosed on or after the 1 January 2026. The document below outlines the full list of dataset staging system and if it differs from TNM 9.

The College will also publish new appendices for each dataset updating the staging and reporting proformas, where appropriate. These will be made available in the coming weeks prior to 1 January 2026.
