The College has recognised that refugee doctors have particular challenges to face as International Medical Graduates (IMGs) in the UK. We are delighted to announce a new initiative dedicated to supporting and assisting refugee pathologists located in the UK. The initiative aims to offer the opportunity to interact with other pathologists which can assist refugee doctors in their pathology careers.

The Refugee Initiative will be free of charge for doctors who have trained as pathologists in their home country and IMGs who have started their training in pathology but were unable to complete their training.

The Refugee Initiative also offers refugee pathologists a free one-year membership at the College which includes a range of benefits including access to:

  • President's newsletter
  • Bulletin (online)
  • Access to members' area of the website (MyRCPath)
  • Discount for College conferences
  • Free FRCPath Part 1 attempt (subject to meeting entry criteria)
  • Access to an RCPath mentor
  • Ticket to International Pathology Day
  • Ticket to Undergraduate and Foundation Day.

The College has also collected a number of resources which are signposted on our Information for Refugee Pathologists section on the website. This includes select schemes and initiatives that are available to all refugee doctors in the UK. These organisations provide additional information and support to refugee doctors, such as preparation for the IELTS or OET English examinations, and in preparing IMGs to sit their General Medical Council (GMC) Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) examinations.

The GMC is also able to provide assistance to refugee doctors and we encourage all refugee doctors to contact them. The College also recommends that refugee pathologists join the British Medical Association (BMA) Refugee Initiative where they can access further assistance and support on their journey.
