During December 2024 and January 2025, the College undertook a survey to measure satisfaction from users with the Learning Environment for Pathology Trainees (LEPT) system. It was the second formal survey since the ePortfolio’s introduction in 2009, but the first to include trainers and assessors.

The new LEPT system was soft launched in September 2021, initially set up to accommodate new trainees who started chemical pathology training and integrated cellular pathology training (ICPT) from August 2021. Existing trainees continued to use the old LEPT system, which was running concurrently with the new LEPT system.
Since the new LEPT system contained changes as per the new curricula, the main objective of the survey was to test its effectiveness in its current format and to make recommendations for incremental improvements. We wanted to understand the perspective and experience of all LEPT users to determine if it was suitable for their needs, to discover whether they found it easy to use and understand, and to identify whether it superseded the navigational functionalities of the old LEPT system in terms of being more intuitive and user friendly. We also wanted to invite ideas for changes we could introduce for both current and future LEPT users.
Key findings
Out of 3,771 invited participants, 271 completed the survey, representing a 7.19% response rate.
Examples of encouraging comments about the LEPT ePortfolio repeated frequently by both trainees and trainer/assessor were that:
- it keeps everything in one place and provides reminders for action
- it is a place to record genuine achievements and learning opportunities backed up with evidence
- the traffic light system that counts the completion of workplace-based assessments (WPBAs), but issues were identified for less-than-full-time (LTFT) trainees.
However, one of the least encouraging comments that resounded from the trainees was that they find some of the WPBA forms laborious to complete, as many tend to have irrelevant mandatory fields. These comments will be addressed during the period of curricula review that started in June 2025.
Our recommendations
Based on the findings of the survey, an action plan has been developed by the College’s Team to take forward the recommendations. Full details of the recommendations can be found in Appendix 1 of the report on page 52.
A big thank you to those trainees, trainers and assessors who responded to the survey - your feedback has helped us immensely. You can download a full copy of the report’s findings and recommendations below.
