To celebrate National Pathology Week 2026, the Wales Regional Council are excited to be running a competition for school-age children in Wales.

What is pathology? What do pathologists do?

Pathologists are involved in every aspect of healthcare, from preventing and diagnosing diseases, to giving treatment advice and using cutting edge genomic technologies. There are 17 pathology specialties, and our workforce includes doctors, vets, dentists and scientists.

To celebrate pathology, we are running a competition for primary schools and secondary schools in Wales. 

Primary schools

For primary schools, we are asking pupils to be as creative as they can be, and to design a picture with 1 of the following titles:

  • What is pathology?
  • What do pathologists do?
  • What does a virus look like?
  • Draw the nastiest looking germ you can
  • Hand washing poster to prevent the spread of germs

Secondary schools

For secondary schools, we are inviting students to write an essay about 1 of the following topics (maximum word count 1,000 words):

  • Will bacteriophages replace antibiotics in the treatment of sepsis?
  • Are viruses living organisms?
  • Can hepatitis C be eliminated as a public health threat?
  • Why isn’t there a treatment for the common cold?
  • Histopathology will no longer be required in the era of liquid biopsies
  • Faecal transplants could be used to treat depression
  • How does pathology help doctors solve medical mysteries?
  • If pathology didn't exist, what would healthcare look like?

The winner for each category will receive a £50 book token.

I ddathlu Wythnos Genedlaethol Patholeg 2026, mae Cyngor Rhanbarthol Cymru yn gyffrous i gynnal cystadleuaeth i blant ysgol yng Nghymru.

Beth yw patholeg? Beth mae patholegwyr yn ei wneud?

Mae patholegwyr yn ymwneud â phob agwedd ar ofal iechyd, o atal a diagnosio clefydau, i roi cyngor ar driniaeth a defnyddio technolegau genomig arloesol. Mae 17 o arbenigeddau patholeg, ac mae ein gweithlu yn cynnwys meddygon, milfeddygon, deintyddion a gwyddonwyr.

I ddathlu Patholeg, rydym yn cynnal cystadleuaeth ar gyfer ysgolion cynradd ac ysgolion uwchradd yng Nghymru. Ar gyfer ysgolion cynradd, rydym yn gofyn i ddisgyblion fod mor greadigol ag y gallant, ac i ddylunio llun gydag un o'r teitlau canlynol:

  • Beth yw patholeg?
  • Beth mae patholegwyr yn ei wneud?
  • Sut mae firws yn edrych?
  • Tynnwch lun o’r germ casaf posib
  • Poster golchi dwylo i atal lledaeniad germau

Ar gyfer ysgolion uwchradd, rydym yn gwahodd disgyblion i ysgrifennu traethawd am un o'r pynciau canlynol (uchafswm o 1,000 o eiriau, mewn Cymraeg neu Saesneg):

  • A fydd bacterioffagau yn disodli gwrthfiotigau wrth drin sepsis?
  • A yw firwsiaid yn organebau byw?
  • A ellir dileu hepatitis C fel bygythiad i iechyd y cyhoedd?
  • Pam nad oes triniaeth ar gyfer yr annwyd cyffredin?
  • Ni fydd angen histopatholeg mwyach yn oes biopsiau hylif
  • Gellid defnyddio trawsblaniadau ysgarthol i drin iselder
  • Sut mae patholeg yn helpu meddygon i ddatrys dirgelion meddygol?
  • Pe na bai patholeg yn bodoli, sut fyddai gofal iechyd yn edrych? 

Bydd yr enillydd ym mhob categori yn derbyn tocyn llyfr gwerth £50.
