KPIs for laboratory services
Key performance indicators (KPIs) have been developed to assist laboratories in demonstrating their contribution to patient management pathways. The KPIs should provide evidence of conformity with standards of accreditation and, through discussion with users of the service, will facilitate demand management and support a clinically effective service. The suggested standards of performance will be regularly reviewed to ensure that they meet the reasonable demands of modern medical practice.
A joint pilot between the College and UKAS, which ran from October 2013 to April 2015, has demonstrated that laboratories are willing to, and capable of, collecting the KPI data. The processes for collating anonymised data that were tested in the pilot were cumbersome and too few laboratories in individual specialities submitted information to generate statistical outcomes on the whether or not numerical targets were appropriate or achievable. The College wishes to thank UKAS and all of the laboratory services that participated in the pilot for their contribution and support.
The College is aware that many laboratories in the UK have adopted the KPIs and find them useful in monitoring their performance and in demonstrating the quality of the service to users, management and commissioners. Monitoring of this nature is an integral part of accreditation under ISO15189.
Following the Pathology Quality Assurance Review, nationally commissioned work on a dashboard of key assurance indicators has started. The College has had some input to this process and has deferred further work on the KPIs until the outcome of the dashboard project is known.
