This online event will shine a spotlight on careers in red cell haematology. Our speakers are consultant Dr Emma Drasar and senior specialty registrar Dr Chloe Merrion. The session (to be held on Zoom Webinar) aims to give medical students and foundation doctors a comprehensive introduction to this fascinating pathology specialty. Our speakers will cover:

  • Their personal journeys into their specialty
  • What working in their specialty is like day to day
  • The transition from trainee to consultant
  • The contribution that red cell haematology makes to patients, their families and healthcare.

Dr Emma Drasar

Emma trained at St Barts and the Royal London School of Medicine, University of London and qualified in 2001.  She was appointed as a Haematology Consultant at The Whittington Hospital and University College Hospitals London in 2016.  She completed her haematology training at King's College Hospital where she was appointed Clinical Lecturer in Sickle Cell Disease between 2009 and 2013.  During that time was awarded her PhD based on research into markers of severity and predictors of organ dysfunction in sickle cell disease with Professor Swee Lay Thein.  In 2013 she was awarded the Early Stage Investigator prize from the British Society of Haematology.  She has published over 30 papers mostly related to red cell haematology.

She is the North Central London and East of England HCC Lead for Sickle Cell and the North Central, West London and East Anglia HCC Lead for Thalassaemia and Rare anaemias and is the National Peer Review lead for the current cycle. 

Dr Chloe Merrion

Chloe is a senior haematology specialty registrar in the final stages of her training in the North Central London rotation. She has a particular interest in haemoglobinopathies, especially sickle cell disease, and has taken time out of her training programme to undertake a PhD examining inflammation and ageing in sickle cell and thalassemia patients. Chloe hopes to pursue a career that integrates both clinical practice and research in this subspecialty. She is also actively involved in medical education and has had extensive experience in this from a previous fellowship, and holds a postgraduate certificate in medical education.
