Overview

This is a joint webinar with the BSTP (British Society of Toxicological Pathology)

Toxicological pathology sits at the intersection of pathology, pharmacology, and regulatory science yet it is often an underexplored career pathway for many veterinarians,  veterinary pathologists and scientists in training. This webinar aims to explore what toxicologists and toxicological pathologists do in practice, how their roles differ and overlap, and where each fits within the broader landscape of preclinical and regulatory science.

We will hear from speakers working across industry, contract research organisations (CROs), and academia, covering key employers in the UK, Ireland, and Europe, and what they look for in candidates. The webinar will also map out the training routes available including the FRCPath Toxicology pathology specialty and the European College of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Whether you are a pathology resident exploring your options, a qualified veterinary pathologist curious about a career change, a veterinarian or a scientist considering toxicology as an entry point into the field, this session is designed to give you a practical overview of what a career in toxicological pathology looks like today.

This event will take place at 12:30pm and last approximately 1 hour.

Toxicological Pathology: Roles, Training, and Opportunities

  • Richard Haworth

    SPEAKER

Richard is the Founder and Director of RosettaPath, a science-based pathology consultancy providing research and toxicologic pathology expertise for biotech, pharmaceutical, contract research organisations, software vendors and academia. He has a keen interest in assessing the translational relevance and predictivity of nonclinical models for both efficacy and safety endpoints to enable effective decision making within medicine development projects.

Prior to RosettaPath, Richard led the Global Pathology team within Clinical Pharmacology & Safety Sciences at AstraZeneca which provides pathology expertise to assess nonclinical efficacy and safety of projects across a range of therapeutic modalities and diverse disease indications.

Richard qualified in Veterinary medicine from the University of Cambridge, completed a DPhil at Oxford in experimental pathology and immunology, was Head of the UK Pathology department at GSK from 2014 to 2022 and is board certified in pathology (FRCPath, DipECVP) and toxicology (DABT). He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Toxicologic Pathology.

  • Dr Jan Klapwijk

    SPEAKER

I originally trained as a veterinarian at Liverpool University and practiced small animal medicine for 6 years before moving into laboratory animal medicine at Smith Kline Beecham in 1989.

In 1994 I joined Glaxo Wellcome to retrain as a toxicological pathologist. Since then I have gained 30 years’ experience in regulatory toxicology / safety assessment and discovery support across a range of therapeutic areas (including inhaled medicines, CNS, oncology) and modalities (small molecules and biopharmaceuticals) within large Pharma in the UK and Italy. From 2005 I worked at GlaxoSmithKline, including a number of years as Head of Pathology. In the last 15 years my experience has expanded to include cell and gene therapies for rare diseases, oncology, CNS and auto-immune disease. I was the nonclinical project team member for Strimvelis (for treatment of ADA-SCID) which achieved a successful marketing application in 2016 - the first licensed ex vivo gene therapy anywhere in the world.

After retiring from GSK in March 2021 I have been working as an independent pathology consultant in my own company (Cornelis Consulting Ltd). I have been a Member / Fellow of the RCPath for 25 years and currently chair the Toxicology Specialty Advisory Committee. I am also a former President of the British Society of Toxicological Pathology.
