‘We Breathe Together: Pathology Through The Ages’ is an immersive, interactive experience that celebrates the multi-disciplinary aspects within pathology through engaging sixth form. Through using technology that will allow people to assume the role of a pathologist or clinical scientist to tackle three different lung cancer cases set in three very different time periods, it is an exploration of pathology as a career as well as the way medical technology has changed from the 20th century to 21st century. The event is designed to tie in with National Pathology Week 2021’s theme of ‘All Together Now'.

We will host the event in a sixth form setting as an interactive problem-solving exhibition, where the three cases will be presented visually to participants. The participant will choose their role as either a pathologist or a clinical scientist and will receive varying information on the case accordingly.
The information will be communicated through gamification; as defined by Merriam-Webster, this involves the application of ‘gamelike elements’ - such as points scoring, competition ranking and rewards - to tasks that are generally not considered games.
Gamification will be implemented through videos of clinical summaries and marker-based AR (Augmented Reality) components accessed through smartphones which will allow participants to access the steps to diagnosing. This includes a simulation of macroscopic examination using a 3D model, visuals of histopathology via slide photographs and final analysis using multiple-choice options leading to diagnosis. The accuracy of the diagnosis in comparison with the true case will be considered; those with high accuracy will receive vouchers as a reward.
Additionally, promotional materials from the Royal College of Pathologists will be distributed.

The aim of this event is to:
1. increase awareness about role of pathology, specifically about role of cellular pathology in cancer diagnosis and treatment among sixth form students,
2. increase awareness about various career options in pathology.
