11 September 2025

To mark World Patient Safety Day 2025, the College is hosting a live webinar on Tuesday 16 September, spotlighting the essential role pathology plays in ensuring safe, effective care for our youngest and most vulnerable patients.

Pathologists play a critical role in improving patient safety, particularly in paediatric, neonatal and perinatal care. From early diagnosis to informed treatment decisions, pathology supports the safe, effective care of babies, children and young people across the healthcare system.

This free one-hour webinar will explore how clinical pathological pathways directly impact patient safety, when they work well and when they don’t. Through real-world case studies, we will reflect on challenges and opportunities to improve outcomes for young patients.

Speakers

We have a brilliant line up for the webinar, with expertise from across several pathology specialties. Dr Michael Eden will be chairing the event. As the Clinical Director of Safety and Quality and chair of the newly formed Patient Safety Steering Group, Mike is well placed to guide the discussion. He will be joined by College President, Dr Bernie Croal, Paediatric Pathologist Professor Marta Cohen (Vice President, Learning) and Consultant Medical Microbiology and Virology, Dr Noha El Sakke OBE (Vice President, Communications).

Embedding patient safety at the core of our work

Patient safety is a strategic priority for the College. The launch of the RCPath Patient Safety Steering Group earlier this year, brings together experts from across pathology to advise on safety priorities and promote learning across the profession. The group's aims are aligned with the College's Patient Safety and Quality Strategy 2024–2029

In addition, ongoing development and review of clinical guidelines that underpin safe, consistent practice in areas including paediatric and perinatal pathology. This work supports our members to lead improvements – from redesigning pathways to addressing delays, minimising harm and ensuring the voices of patients, families and staff are heard.

About World Patient Safety Day

Launched by the World Health Organization in 2019, World Patient Safety Day is held each year on 17 September to raise awareness of avoidable harm in healthcare and promote action to keep patients safe.

This year’s theme, ‘Safe care for every newborn and every child’, is a powerful reminder of the need for timely, accurate diagnoses and multidisciplinary collaboration.
